On 15 July 2026, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese delivered a major speech titled “AI in Australia’s Interests” at the University of Sydney. His central argument was that Australia cannot stop AI-driven change, but it can influence how AI is developed, where its infrastructure is built, who benefits from it and what protections apply.

But Australia's leading environmental issues exist around climate, water and power. Data Centres are more than just a component of the technology that drives the digital landscape and AI. Data Centres like Power Generation facilities are national infrastructure. If fact the data centers within Australia can reach beyond Australian boarders.

There are good reasons why data centres cluster in and around cities. They need fibre networks, skilled workers, strong power connections, enterprise customers and low-latency links to users. For some workloads, proximity matters. Financial services, critical systems, cloud connectivity and real-time AI inference can all benefit from being close to major population and business centres. But the disadvantages are becoming harder to ignore.
